The Importance of Workplace Technology and Internal Collaboration

There is no denying that social media and mobile technology has changed work.  It’s certainly changed the way we engage, innovate and collaborate internally as well as externally.  Add in the growing millenial workforce who are flexible and technology savvy in direct contrast to their Boomer bosses, and you have one conflicted and crowded workplace.  Earlier this year, I wrote an article for J. Wiley & Son’s Employment Relations Today Journal about how these new technologies are not only impacting your workplace but companies human resources teams and human capital strategies.  You can download your copy here.  The infographic below is based on my journal article.

Develop a Work Crisis Management & Employee Engagement Strategy

While there are certainly examples of social media and technology gone wrong like the leaked recorded video of Oklahoma Christian publishing company, Tate Publishing, these are relatively few and far between.  Even still we should be prepared for the event that a social media and work crisis situation does arise.  What we don’t realize is that in order for the younger workforce who now serves as the majority of your candidate and employee market, that company’s must adapt their old ways to meet the demands of this new, sometimes transient, and flexible workforce.  It’s no longer enough to talk about your millenials jumping ship and Facebooking at work, you must take action.  That means changing up your game plan to fit this new demographics interesting, needs, and attention.  Take a look at some of the ways social media, technology, and mobile are changing how HR, recruiters, and senior leaders engage the new workforce.

46% of company leaders believe that their employees will misuse social media and other workplace technology. Let’s worry about poor employee performance individually and focus on how technology helps us stay connected and collaborate.

57% of companies believe that most important objective of social media and internal engagement platforms at work is innovation.

The top 4 internal collaboration and workplace communication platforms are Yammer, Chatter, Telligent Enterprise, & Jive.
