Okay- so I know I will be aging myself by saying some of the things I am about to say to you. I want to talk to you about 10 years ago. No, let’s talk 20 years ago. Heck- let’s go back 30 years. Were you alive? Do you remember what life was like? Even if you weren’t around, you will be able to relate.

I know things are constantly changing and ALL of us have seen some sort of technological advancement in the world. I wasn’t around when the Model T came out, I didn’t see the first black and white TV, and I certainly didn’t see Elvis sing “Hound Dog” live. I was, though, around in the 70’s & 80’s. I remember vividly what it was like.

Social Media & Privacy? We Should Just Stop Caring

In this day and age we are glued to our phones. Truly, how did we survive without smart phones? We are posting pictures on Facebook, Tweeting on Twitter, texting our friends where we are going to be in the next half -hour. The list goes on and on.

I know many of you are afraid of social media. I’m here to tell you to get over it. It is part of life now. If you think you are hiding from the world by not tweeting, not being on Facebook, you are just fooling yourself. There is no privacy anymore. If someone wants to find you, they will. You are in some database, somewhere and there is more information about you and your every move you make.

In the 80’s there were payphones. In the 90’s there were pagers. In early 2000 there were phones that were huge analog phones. Then came the Iphone. Fellas, it’s over. You will be found.

There are satellites, there are computers on every desk in America, there are video cameras, and there are tracking devices on your phones. Even as I write this blog, someone, somewhere knows I am doing it.

I’m not telling this to freak you out. You already know it. You can’t avoid it. It is just the cold hard fact.

You know what- who cares? So, embrace it. Enjoy it. Tweet, Text, Blog, get on Google Plus, Instagram, You Tube, Pinterest, and even Vine. It’s fun.

Social Media is here to stay. Have fun with it. Don’t stick your head in a hole like an ostrich and act like it is not there. It will help enhance your career if you use it right.

I want to tell you Social Media has done so much for my career, and I know it can help yours also.  I am a Recruiter.  A better name may be a “detective”.  No matter what your profession, it can help your career.  Give it a try and stop trying to avoid the unavoidable.

    1. Thank you, Jay, for sharing the post. I have to agree with a lot of points that the article talks about. With Social Media though, I believe a lot of people are afraid of it. They should not be afraid. Embrace it. Use it to your advantage. Use it for your job. As a recruiter, I use it daily.
