The rise in mobile device use for job-search has dramatically changing the hiring landscape. Forward thinking companies have optimized their career sites for mobile users and are looking at how to leverage mobile apps and modify their HR processes to provide a streamlined online application process.

Leverage Mobile for Quick Touch Points

Job seekers leverage mobile because it allows them to turn down time into valuable job search and networking time.

The mobile experience should be about viewing vs. reading.  Candidates like to scroll and swipe between jobs and easily navigate through pages and functionality.  It’s great for work that can be wedged in time between other things, such as scanning job postings, watching a short video clip, signing up for job alerts, responding or an inquiry or clicking a button to apply for a newly posted position.  Remember- short spurts! You want to be the site they visit while waiting in line at Starbucks. Keep your career site clean, simple and fun to play around in!

Mobile is NOT effective for work that requires concentration or multiple steps.  All too often, the application process on a mobile site is arduous (especially if you have fat fingers.)  More than 40% of mobile candidate abandon the process!  Candidates want to be able to download their resume from Dropbox and fill in a minimal number of fields to apply.  Or, they may choose to email the job to them selves to complete later.

The shift to mobile recruiting provides the opportunity for disruptive change- a complete overhaul the application process.  Organizations need to carefully assess what information they need to collect and how they can leverage information from social profiles. New software platforms such as Three Sparks, Jibe and iMomentous allow large organizations to seamlessly connect internal software systems that sort resumes and screen candidates.

Success in Mobile Recruiting

Geico was recently recognized for excellence in Mobile Talent Interaction and Online Application by Potential Park. Shannon Smedstad, HR Social Media and Employment Brand Lead at Geico explains, “It’s worth planning for a full mobile experience for your candidates.  We’re seeing a significant surge in candidate’s mobile use and its imperative to bring in members of your IT, HRIS as well as recruiting team to provide an integrated solution that’s a win-win for candidates and your company.”

In 2011, PepsiCo launched their first mobile app- Possibilities- to create an engagement experience, allowing candidates to learn more about PepsiCo’s products and people- creating a new employment brand. In late 2012, their data revealed that 90% of people who clicked through job-related emails from the company did so on their phones. In response, PepsiCo rolled out a brand new mobile-friendly career site that allows you to apply to their jobs straight from your phone.

The International Data Corporation predicts that by 2015, there will be more consumers in the U.S. who are accessing the Internet via mobile devices than through PCs. The job-search evolution from web to mobile devices makes it easier for candidates to connect with organizations, closing the talent gap faster. But companies need to offer a fully integrated mobile experience that connects with their legacy ATS system to capture the always-connected candidates. How has mobile recruiting transformed your recruiting processes? How are you modifying your ATS to integrate with mobile devices? What are your best practices?  I look forward to your comments.
