Welcome to a new series on the Workology Podcast we are kicking off that focuses on the future of work. This series is in collaboration with the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology or PEAT.

According to the most recent US Census, almost 20% of people living in the USA had a mobility, sensory, cognitive or other impairment in 2010. Many modes of transportation are inaccessible, unreliable or ill-suited to people with disabilities and older adults, which often means fewer opportunities for employment, housing, healthcare, and education.

Episode 180: How Autonomous Vehicles Create a More Inclusive & Diverse Workplace with Amitai Bin-Nun (@aybinnun)

Autonomous vehicles offer a way to improve mobility for people with disabilities helping them not only get to work be lead a more mobile and empowered life. The technology behind this is still very new, but it offers a lot of promise for not only people with disabilities but also the aging workforce. This also benefits employers are two often underemployed groups have access to transportation and filling roles within your organization.

In this episode of the Workology Podcast is part of our Future of Work series powered by PEAT, the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology. We will be hearing about autonomous vehicles and self-driving technology is being shaped as well as how this tech is helping to change the future of job creation, unemployment, and the talent landscape.

Our podcast guest is Amitai Bin-Nun. He is the Vice President, Autonomous Vehicles and Mobility Innovation at Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE), which seeks to accelerate the deployment of vehicle automation and maximize the energy security and social benefits of the technology. Amitai came to SAFE from the innovation team at KPMG Strategy where he advised executives on the implications of emerging vehicle technologies and partnered with IBM Watson to explore potential financial services applications for cognitive computing. Amitai is also a former Associate at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program.

Mobility for All Creates Jobs and Powers the Economy

Amitai shares that we spend 7 billion hours sitting in traffic making the need for efficiency and a framework extremely important. I agree and as a resident of Austin, Texas, our 1-35 highway was recently named the worst in America. Imagine not only the time savings of having a more efficient transportation process but also how accessible travel is when all people regardless of if there is public transport or has a driver’s license.

This ability to access transportation makes it easier for everyone to have mobility including the ability to get to and from work. Amitai shared there are about 2 million people with a disability of working age who never leave their home. He says this is likely because they don’t have access to transportation. While self-driving car by itself doesn’t solve all our mobility problems, he believes that the inability to drive is a big reason why people with disabilities can’t get the transportation they know they need.

Workforce Shift

As Amitai said, transportation is a fundamental part of our identity and life. Autonomous vehicles make mobility and the ability to get around to just live and work that much easier, especially for people with disabilities. We are at full employment and as employers, we need to look at different talent pools to fill our current and future roles. More people working earning income and spending makes our economy healthy and even stronger than ever before.

We truly are living in an exciting time where the world is shifting, jobs even 15 years from now when my daughter enters the workforce will be so very different. It is up to us as HR and workplace leaders to help drive conversations and lead the way.
