Ep 72 – #SXSW Preview: How to Find a Job with Social Media

Although it’s a job seeker’s market, you might be surprised to know that only 2% of candidates who apply for job openings get an interview. Today we’re talking about how to use social media to increase your exposure and find a job that matches your interest using social media. It can be done.

Episode 72: How to Find Careers with Social Media

In this special episode, I’m talking with my SXSW Session co-presenter, Carlos Gil. Carlos and I are giving attendees a taste of our session while also talking about career and job search social media strategies in more specifics and detail that we are able to in our SXSW 2016 Job Expo presentation.

Whether it’s jobs or careers in social media, branding, STEM or in other operational areas, you can’t be passive in your job search just like you can’t be passive in building and growing your career. You have to be aggressive but targeted in your efforts. Carlos recommends building a list of 5 of the top companies you’d love to work for and begin researching them and building a strategy from there.

Events like SXSW are such a great place to meet, network and connect with companies, peers and recruiters. As a conference attendee, you likely have access to a list of those in attendance and can research as well as connect with them in advance. I recommend taking advantage of SXSW’s online social network for badge holders called SXSocial to reach out to individuals you are interested in connecting with and begin laying that foundation of a professional relationship.

If you can’t make it to SXSW, don’t despair. The schedule for sessions is posted on the conference site and each SXSW session has its own secondary Twitter hashtags. They allow social media users to interact with those who are in attendance or have an interest in the subject matter or session. This is also a great way to begin building a very targeted list of people you want to get to know more and connect.
