I try to stay away from the trendy topics when it comes to blogging in the #HR space. I like to feel that I don’t jump on the bandwagon now and again and pile on, regarding a particular matter. So now if I were speaking, I would have to throw down one of the transitions like; “With all due respect…:” ok and so now I can go to town on just about anything.
Last week I posted this picture on Facebook. Oddly enough I noticed this on a bathroom that I have used at the University of Illinois Springfield since 1986. On the day that I noticed this, I was there to attend a chapter meeting of my local SHRM Chapter. The text that I included with the pic on Facebook said;
“So I have come up with another measure of how old I am. I am so old I remember when these didn’t exist (it’s not wrong, it just wasn’t out there. — at UIS Sangamon Auditorium.”
This comment was really just on observation, but it does speak to how times are changing.

As I am entering the autumn of my career, I can’t help but see the 4/5 (pick your number) generations in the workplace. I also see our collective value systems colliding. I like to think my two sons (ages 28 and 25) help to keep me grounded in reality. I work with a lot of twenty-somethings now, and boy do they see the world differently than most of my baby boomer peers.
Quite frankly, I like a lot of the things that the Millennial’s support, provided you accept the stereotypes they hold (family is more important than work, women should get paid maternity leave and so on). The societal meter on the issue of gay marriage has move so far so fast, it blows my mind. Recently, in my world, I have seen and heard a lot of support for Caitlyn Jenner, while I have heard some, let’s go with “negative comments” about the award she received, most of that banter seems to be coming from the older folks.
While a great deal has been written and seminars, webinars abound on the Multi-Generational workplace I would surmise that there are a great number of HR leaders who have not yet steaked-out the ground in some of these areas, that are headed right into mainstream America.
Will your Company or Organization be supportive, helpful and understanding to an employee who announce their trans-gender status?
Are you going to let your Company get on the wrong side of the issue or does your moral compass tell you to do the right thing?
If you are going to be more than a caretaker of HR for your organization, you are probably going to have to put your ass on the line and take a position now and then, that doesn’t sit well with some folks. The right decisions can be hard. Make sure you are keeping your company headed in the direction, the one that society is going down – whether you personally like it or not!
