Last night sipping red wine with my two sisters, Julie, my youngest sister casually said this, “Be fluent in sarcasm.”  It resonated with me.  Not only because she is one of the funniest and most carefree people I know, but because we were discussing the topic of growing older and responsibility.  Even though we’re getting older, it’s important to have fun and grow older with a light heart.

Be Fluent in Sarcasm

I’ve been doing a lot of personal reflecting this week likely due to the fact that my 15 year high school reunion is this very weekend.  The oldest of three girls, I have been sometimes labeled as the bossy and serious type.  More conservative than my younger siblings.  Sometimes it’s rough being the first.  <insert sarcastic tone here.> It might just be, however, where I get my competitive streak.

Happiness, laughter, and love keep us young.  Be fluent in sarcasm.  Major in happiness.  Grow memories.  Don’t take life so seriously.  Live a little so shut off your cell phones, disconnect your computer, and do something this weekend you love.

This weekend I’m toasting my youth.  While I like to reminisce I’m not going back.

How are you staying fluent in sarcasm?  And is it working?

  1. “Be fluent in sarcasm” LOVE that! We are very fluent in sarcasm at my house. In fact, you might say it is are native tongue. Well, that is for all but my husband….in the beginning, I had to give him some lessons, but he’s quite fluent now. I’m a big believer in sarcasm – it helps lighten up all those crappy moments and helps keep us sane in my house. Great post!

    1. Love that Monique. A friend of mine on FB said she majored in Sarcasm and it’s the native tongue at your house. Sarcasm helps you make light of the crappy moments in life.

      Thanks for the comment.

  2. Stephen,

If I took myself too seriously, I’d be living another completely different life. A life that’s filled with seriousness is cold and lonely. Fill my life with fun, laughter, and bad jokes.

    thanks for the comment,

  3. Thanks for the timely reminder. Not taking it all so seriously is a good character trait to have. We laugh a lot here in our home and it helps lighten our load.
