The first day of the year brings with it the pressure of coming up with some New Year’s resolutions. This means you have to come up with some goals for 2014. But what if you don’t know what you want? That’s just fine. Plenty of Millennials are in the same boat, so here’s the perfect resolution for you: discover your calling. If you don’t know what you want, make 2014 the year to figure it out. Resolve to discover your dream job, and then go after it.

7 Ways to Discover Your Calling in the New Year

Consider your interests and passions.

College major aside, what are you truly passionate about? Start a list of all of the things that make you, you. Think about the things you love to do, interests, skills, motivations, and things you’re great at. All of these ideas will start to allow you to see patterns. Once you’ve got a lengthy list, you can look for what they have in common or what industry ties them together.

Do some research.

Once you think you’ve got an idea of how your passions fit together, do some research on potential jobs and industries. Look for a career path where you could enjoy yourself and excel (even if it requires a little more training). Make a list of companies and employers where you think you’d enjoy working.

Register for a class.

If you think you’ve found a solid career option, you need to set yourself on the right path. Start by registering for a class or two starting in January to get a feel for the work. Although classes are very different from real work, they can help tell you if you actually enjoy it.

Talk to people you know.

It can also be extremely beneficial to talk to people you know who are in the same (or similar) career paths. Whether they’re students in the major or professionals doing the actual job, your connections can give you some real insight into the career.

Make new connections.

Expand beyond your current network and try to reach out to others as well. Use LinkedIn or Twitter to find people in the industry to give you advice. Professionals love to help each other out, so most will be more than willing to answer your questions about the job.

Find a mentor.

If you really bond with someone in your network, whether you knew them previously or not, you might even be able to get them to be your mentor. If you decide you truly want to pursue this new career path, they can help you gain more experience and guide you from your current path to the new one.

Apply for internships.

Once you’ve got all of these resources in your toolbox, it’s time to be bold. Apply for an internship in your new dream career path. Tailor your current experiences on your resume so they can apply to the job, and express your passion in your cover letter. If you are truly passionate about the role, you will be able to convey that in your cover letter and spark the interest of a recruiter, despite your lack of relevant experience.

Make 2014 the year you discover what you want to do for the rest of your life. Identify your passions and pursue a career where you can use them. People always say the best job is one that doesn’t feel like work at all. Dedicate yourself to finding out what that means for you, and make it happen.
