drawing social network structure

You’ve probably heard this before: networking is one of the most useful tools that you’ll need in your essential ob seeker toolkit. Some stats say that 60% (or more) of jobs are found through networking. But for many of us, that’s easier said than done. And, I think many career coaches would agree that nurturing your network before you need a job is ideal.

“Networking is about give and take,” says Jill Stover, client success manager at TalentReef. “And if you’re giving more than you’re taking, your network will be more willing to help when you need it. So, provide insight on topics your networks are interested in, share useful articles, and introduce people with similar background or interests who could benefit from knowing one another.”

5 Easy Tips to Nurture Your Network

CALL SOMEONE EACH WEEK

Something that I started doing more vigilantly is to call two or three of my contacts each week. We talk shop, share stories, talk about what’s going on in our worlds of work. This is a great way to stay in touch and keep the lines of communication open, in a way that just feels more personal than social media.

LIKE, COMMENT & SHARE

Well, now that I said that calling is more personal than social media, let’s talk about social media. There’s a Twitter chat that I try to get to as often as my schedule allows. It’s a great community of smart, nice and funny people. Being a part of the conversation let’s your extended network know that you’re engaged, present and that you care.

SEND A CARD TO SAY HELLO

In this digital age, where communication zooms around constantly … the slow pace of snail mail can be a welcomed gift. If it’s been a while since you chatted with someone, think how impactful it could be to receive a hand written note. And, the added bonus is they are bound to give you a call after they receive it.

MEET UP DURING EVENTS

Admittedly, I don’t get to as many events as maybe I’d like to, but when I do, I try to make the most of them. Touching base with other attendees that you haven’t seen in awhile to grab coffee or lunch, or simply to sit next to is a nice way to reconnect with conference buddies.

BONUS! Networking Tip for Bloggers

One way that I love to nurture my network is asking for insight. There are many truly talented people that I’ve had the great fortune to meet and learn from. So, I’ll often call or email them about a blog post that I am working on and ask for their thoughts. It’s a win-win for everyone and gives me an “excuse” to reach out.

Now it’s your turn. What is your best tip on how to effectively nurture your network?
