Recruiting is Always About Retention – Every Part.
A couple years ago, I experienced an incredible blast from the past while standing at my company’s booth at the 2010 HR Technology Conference in Chicago. I was having a thoughtful conversation with one of our partners when I glanced to my right while making an extremely important point. 🙂 My attention was pulled away from that conversation, as walking down a nearby aisle was my very first recruiting client! I quickly wrapped up my current discussion and excused myself. Then I proceeded to run from aisle to aisle trying to locate her.
The exhibitors’ hall was quite large and this event occurred during one of the breakout sessions. I was just about to ask Monster if I climb up their huge, two-story booth that towered over the hall to have a look around when I suddenly spotted her. I rushed to her, calling her name. She turned and struggled only briefly to remember my name and we proceeded to speak for nearly an hour. I brought her cback to the Broadbean booth, where I proudly introduced her to my CEO, Kelly Robinson – “Please meet my very first client…” I beamed.
Even today, I cannot believe my great fortune in seeing her once again and thanking her for making my very first client relationship so special. I had been a recruiter for about three months when I attended a California Healthcare HR conference when I met Jean and began to work for her / with her. My very first assignment? She retained our healthcare-specific search firm to find an Oncology Manager in Central California. This was extremely difficult and became a protracted assignment. While continuing to recruit for this particular role, we were also retained on numerous other assignments on behalf of Jean’s organization, Kaweah Delta Healthcare District.
The other recruitments were completed quickly and with much success, but finding the right Oncology Manager was another story. It took a little nearly a year, but we did bring it to a successful close, but only after several months of referrals, as well as immense and intense cold calling. The era was pre-internet, pre-email. The job descriptions and benefits’ packages were sent by the postal service. Without exaggeration, I believe I called every single oncology department in America. Jean, the VP of HR for this large healthcare organization, was satisfied with each placement and continued to retain us. She was my client for nearly five years before I left that particular firm.
Seeing her again was such a great joy, she is now a VP of HR for a major cheese company, having left the Healthcare HR world herself. But we caught up with each other at an HR Tech Conference, that she never would have attended previously. She even said to me, “I have no idea why I am here.” You never know when your performance today will affect your tomorrow.
It is all about retention.
Retaining your reputation as someone who does what they promise/propose.
Retaining your integrity.
Retaining your network.
As the Recruiting Conference season heats up once again, I look forward to seeing many people I have known for years, as well as collaborating with new and long-time connections.
Never fail to realize that it is, indeed, a very small world…
